Halloween Musings

As it is Halloween aka October 31, I thought I’d talk about/rant on some common themes I’ve noticed.

First, as a college student, “Halloween Weekend” is a thing, basically it’s a regular collage weekend, except everyone is dressed in costumes. I personally believe Halloween should only be celebrated that one day as intended and how I grew up. Plus, I admit how it can be fun to dress up, it’s only for a day. Why not be happy as yourself? Why do you need the extra days of costumes?

Next, another big concern are the costumes. To me, I see college students trying so hard to be a “sexy” version of a famous thing. If you want to go as a sexy person, if you want to, go for it, just don’t mask it as a “sexy version” of some pure, innocent costume. For instance, a sexy version of Minnie Mouse, Supergirl, professionals, an Ebola Nurse, and just about anything else does not go with the innocence and purity of the character. If you want to be sexy, then do it, but don’t call yourself that character. Those two do not meld well.

In fact, here’s a scene from the 2012 season 2 Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode:

Alison: Is the doctor in?                                                                                                                                Noel Kahn: Actually, I’m a gynecologist.
Alison: Ooh.
Noel: Care to make an appointment? Hot chick, Britney, hot witch, hot Indian chick – And, uh – Mary Queen of Scots.
Hanna: He doesn’t know who that is.
Aria: Does anybody?                                                                                                                                     Spencer: She was born to be queen, but her cousin stole the throne, and then she was accused of treason and her family had her executed.

See? Exhibit A. Guys at least half of the time won’t even get what you are. So, either go full out ala Spencer or keep it simple.

Whatever you choose, just be yourself.

I HAVE VERY IMPORTANT NEWS.

Guess what? So, I had applied for a program with my school for this summer… and I got in!!! Guess where I’ll be?!?!?!

That’s right, NYC. I’ll be taking a class (where we get a backstage tour of the Gershwin!), wandering the city (Hello? I must go see If/Then, finally!) and wait for it: INTERNING. And as a journalism major, I’m hoping for a magazine internship!

We get to explore the city, take class (hands-on exploring) in the fields of Comm (!!), business, and theater/broadway (My inner fangirl is shrieking right now.) We will then be researching one area in the city for a big paper, and it can be ANYthing! And on top of that, interning! Which, I may admit that my Chanukah present from my parents will be the perfect addition to my NYC magazine internship wardrobe. 😉

AHHHHH!!!! I’m SO EXCITED!!

I’ll try to post a weekly (if not daily or every other day– it all depends on my schedule with interning) blog post this summer from my experience.

I’m so excited, I’ve been pinning outfits for my internship:

And COMMENT BELOW if you have any suggestions on places to visit or networking opportunities for internships! (I’ve only made it to the city once.)

After all,

It’s here. It’s new. I’ll review it.

So, the new One Direction video for “Steal My Girl” was released today. And I thought I’d provide shot-by-shot commentary of the video using screenshots. Here we go.

We start with the boys exiting a trailer in the middle of the desert, waiting to meet their video director.

Surprise! It’s Danny DeVito!

Now go watch the video in it’s full glory.

New post. New thoughts.

Hi everyone. Sorry I haven’t had much time to devote to this blog recently: a journalist’s job is never done, as I’ve been crazy busy with homework, class projects and everything thing else I’ve overcommitted myself to. (But, I sort of love my life that way.)

I thought I’d just sit in ramble for today’s post. Just talk.

What’s been happening since I last posted?

  1. George Clooney is officially off-the-market and married an amazing high-profile human rights lawyer.
  2. I’ve become obsessed with “Once Upon a Time” AND “How to Get Away With Murder.” As well as, “Manhattan Love Story,” “A to Z,” “Red Band Society”  and of course, Greys and Scandal. Great shows, start watching. (I mean, #TGIT, anyone?)
  3. The whole Ebola news thing everyone should be aware of is big news.
  4. Applying to study and intern in NYC this summer and London this fall. (Dream: to intern at a publication like Seventeen. Fingers crossed!)
  5. I interviewed a major YouTube star (“HelloKaty”) and wrote a profile on that. Read it here.
  6. One Direction announced the track list for their fourth studio album, “Four.”
  7. Neil Patrick Harris will host the 2015 Oscars.
  8. Taylor Swift’s new pop album “1989” will be released any day now. And “Out of the Woods” may be inspired by a Mr. Harry Styles.
  9. Everyone’s been obsessing over “American Horror Story” which stars my camp alum, Emma Roberts.
  10. The Kansas City Royals will officially be playing in World Series. (GO CARDINALS!)

One thing I’ve noticed about the world: is such a huge focus on the superficial sides. And while, I love fashion and celeb gossip, I admit that’s not what matters: family, doing what you love, etc– that’s what matters, not what you wear or how popular you are, it’s how you perceive yourself and who you want to be. No one can belittle who you are or tell you who to be except for yourself. Be brave, be strong, be yourself. Because no one else for stick up for yourself other than you.

I just wish more girls, and people in general, would be able to be 100 percent themselves and not worry about how others perceive them. So, if you want to wear a certain outfit or attain for a certain career: go for it. Chase your dreams. Be a superstar. Be amazing. You are amazing. You don’t need anyone else to tell you that. Your opinion is the only one that matters.

Alright, I’m off to watch Greys, Scandal and the Cardinal game, as well as work on some essays. Thanks for reading. xx

Guess where I was last night???

IMG_2541

That’s right. I saw the one-and-only ED SHEERAN, again. This time live in Charlotte, North Carolina; which happened to be the first time Sheeran had been.

First, we had to drive TWO HOURS from campus to see Ed. But, hello? It’s Ed. Worth it.

The first song was “I’m a Mess,” which I was pleasantly surprised he played! But, I loved it nonetheless.

After the song ended, he spoke in his British accent, “Sing along. And if you don’t know the words, make some up.” How great is that? He’s humble and just wants to put on a good show.

He goes into “Lego House” next, which I didn’t record because I saw him perform two years ago at a meet and greet back home. But, anyway, I haven’t heard him play in this big a venue, definitely louder. It was interesting to compare the venues with his setlist and performance vibe.

Next comes “Don’t,” mixed with “Girls Ain’t Loyal” and “No Diggity.” Loved his energy, per usual.

Next is “Drunk,” where he kept playing though the issues with his loop pedal, the only thing on stage with him and his guitar. This was followed up by “Take it Back,” a more rap song that I still enjoyed.

He discusses the distance travelled for all of us to get here. Two hour drive for me! He goes into “One!!”

He thanks his support act, UK’s own Rudimental, who I had never heard of before. And in between EACH song, he kept having to switch guitars because of how hard he plays it. Talk about dedication. Then he sings “Bloodstream,” followed by “Tenerife Sea,” nonetheless lovely. It was beautiful.

He sang “Runaway” next and included a super surprise cover that I won’t spoil, so just watch it! Hashtag, 90’s throwback!

Then, he told us the story of his girlfriend from high school and how they had a little chicken, who accidentally died under their watch. He added, “In memory of the little chicken,” and played “Little Bird.” Another old hit that I still adored.

He then explained how most people relate to “Afire Love” and told us to “resist the urge to yelp” during the song. Awww. Next, was my personal favorite: “Thinking Out Loud!!” (This was where my phone ran out of storage, ugh!)

He then went into “Give Me Love” and the crowd was silent, and that’s just how I like an Ed concert, where I can hear his talented vocals.

At 9:45, he said, “We’ve come to the end.” Sad face from me. He then played “I See Fire.” I loved it when the crowd was silent, so we could hear how AH-MAZING his vocal range truly is. Also, he had said his goal for the night was to have everyone lose their voice. Laughing out loud. Even though, at an Ed concert, it is pretty much inevitable.

Ed literally set his guitar down, waved to the crowd and exited the stage. But, then he was back a minute later for his three-song encore of “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,” “A Team,” and, of course, “Sing.”

  1. “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.” Loved it. And I literally could rap his entire song with him. And he beatboxed a little too. He even ad-libbed “since I went mainstream with A Team.” Ahh. Love it. He then took his usual Insta photo of the crowd. Sad face I wasn’t in the photo, again. But, oh well, because I was there, AGAIN. 🙂
  2. “A Team” was a beautiful ballad as per usual. And everyone lit up their iPhone flashlight apps. He finishes the song and it was so pretty.
  3. Finally, it was time for “Sing.” He’s just so energetic and ended the song with just the crowd singing the ah ohs section.

As everyone was leaving, people were singing “Sing” still, per Ed’s request, of course.

Overall, it was a perfect night and perfect example of what a concert should be.

1D Update

Screen Shot 2014-09-08 at 9.36.46 PM

Okay, yes. I’m a One Direction fan. There music is exactly the type I like to listen to.

And guess what, fellow directioners? A new album is coming, November 14 to be exact. And it’s titled “Four.” I have no idea why it’s named that, but I hope it has a symbolic meaning, other than it’s the fourth album, because that’s not clever.

Follow the link below and you can pre-order the album and hear an exclusive track, “Fireproof.” I have no idea where this track came from, certainly not from the 1D we knew from the past three albums. But, it’s good. More mature. Maybe too mature for the 13-year-old fans, but for the college-aged fans like moi, it’s clear we’re the target demo.

Enjoy the audio track below! xx

What I Think Every Journalism Student Needs

As an always-busy college journalism student, I thought today’s post would cover what I think every journalism student needs for optimum success. (Keep in mind, this is all based on what I’ve learned so far.)

Courtesy of tumblr.com

  • Online portfolio [Weebly]

Weebly is an online portfolio site (there are many), and I’ve recently learned how important that your portfolio, writing samples, work experience and resume should be online. It’s easy to use. Future employers can read everything or download and print. Another thing about Weebly, it’s super easy for beginners to use. I’d definitely recommend creating one, and then make sure you keep updating it! (Helpful tip: With your resume, you should list all of your “relevant coursework” and a small summary, because in college, that is the bulk of your experience.)

  • Hard copy of your resume & portfolio/writing samples

With that being said, it’s still crucial to have hard copies of everything. I literally went to Michael’s and bought artist portfolios that I can slip my work between the sleeves. (I have two; one from my high school paper and one for my internship blog. And I’ll probably need another for my college work.) Going to an interview works the best when you are organized with copies of your resumes, writing samples and portfolio work will always impress.

  • LinkedIn profile

This is extremely important for networking. LinkedIn is perfect for connecting with employers, friends and family, because you never know who you’ll have a mutual connection with. Networking is probably one of the biggest tips I could give you about being a professional journalist. Get out there and meet people. Not only that, but prove your prowess and your skills!

  • Professional Twitter account

Now, I love my personal Twitter as much as the next person, but I can admit that it won’t help me find a job. Tweeting about college traditions, friends, your reality TV guilty pleasures, et cetera won’t seem impressive to prospective employers. And yes, employers will check your social media presence, ESPECIALLY as a journalist. My professional Twitter I use for tweeting things about journalism, as well as links to stories I write (because journalists love self-promotion.). Helpful tip: use a professional headshot as your Twitter profile picture/icon. An iPhone picture is never as good of a quality as a good camera like a DSLR or something. (I don’t know much about cameras, forgive me.)

  • A Blog

Like WordPress, etc, having and maintaining a blog is the perfect way to interact with your audience, as well as a way for you to keep writing when you’re not on assignment or you can write about a passion, something you don’t write about as a journalist.

  • External hard drive

Okay, this one is more for photography and videography. But, a good journalist can do it all. And having an external hard drive has the perfect amount of storage to hold it all. This one linked above is what I have. It’s very thin, which is perfect for carrying it around.

  • USB drives

This one seems like a no brainer for journalists. We need to BACK UP OUR WORK. I know that no one wants to hear it, but, computers have glitches, and when you’re on deadline, you’re going to wish you had another way to access your story.

  • Headphones or ear buds

Again, this is mostly for getting sound bites. Good journalists need to be able to do it all, so if you can write a story, conduct interviews, film a quick video or sound clip; you’re golden. It’s such a competitive market that we need to be able to do it all to compete with all the other prospective hires out there.

  • Moleskine or notebook (one that can fit in a purse is best!) & pen/pencil

Obviously, a journalism needs to take notes, DUH. A Moleskine is perfect because it’s small enough to always have with you. Perfect for when you see a quick story, get a quick quote or jot down a story idea. Definitely invest in one. You can easily find them at Barnes & Noble or Target.

  • Digital recorder

This is helpful for interviews when transcribing quotes. If you are serious about becoming a journalist, definitely invest in a recorder. It’ll help when you’re on deadline late at night and can’t remember the exact phrasing of a quote. Don’t forget to always ask your subject for permission to tape the interview beforehand! (You don’t want to anger anyone!)

  • Youtube account

Again, this is more for filming. But, it’s good to have one to quickly upload videos, and you can edit it easily on Youtube.

  • SD card & camera

Cameras are helpful when you are writing a quick story and need to get a photo to accompany it. Because you never know if a staff photographer will be covering the event you’re writing about. Again, as journalists, we have to be editors, writers, filmmakers, photographers, etc: we must do it all.

If this list hasn’t scared you off, then go forth and start writing and look for stories!

Top of the Charts

Hi all. Sorry it’s been awhile– classes have taken over my schedule. But, I’m back now and this week I’m going to discuss my thoughts on the top music songs, that I’ve heard of.

1. “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift

Finally, she’s calling herself pop. Finally. At first, I hated this song. But now, after letting it settle, I like it. Definitely has a good dance vibe.

2.”Bang Bang” by Ariana Grande, Jessie J, & Nicki Minaj

You already know my thoughts on this song.

3. “Break Free” by Ariana Grande feat. Zedd

Love Ariana right now. Love this song.

4. “Black Widow” by Iggy Azalea feat. Rita Ora

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC1n5jHZKqM

Normally, I hate rap. But, in this case, I’ll make an exception.

5. “Maps” by Maroon 5

Definitely good driving music.

6. “Amnesia” by 5SOS

I’v already talked about them. But this song is good. I want to see a Travis Wall contemporary number choreographed to it.

7. “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VllxW1hnN58

Love this song. And it’s rumored to be about Ellie Goulding cheating on Mr. Sheeran with 1D’s Niall Horan. Hmm…

What songs are you currently listening to?
